If you've been thinking about chess lessons in Decatur, AL but aren't sure what you'd actually be signing up for, this post is for you. Whether you're a parent considering lessons for your child, an adult who's always wanted to learn, or someone who already plays and wants structured improvement — here's a straightforward look at how Decatur Chess works.

Who the Lessons Are For

All instruction at Decatur Chess is designed for beginners through intermediate players — roughly up to around 1200 rated on Chess.com or Lichess. If you've never touched a piece before, you're in the right place. If you've been playing casually for a while and want to get more serious, you're also in the right place.

One thing I'll always be upfront about: if you're an advanced or tournament-level player looking for high-level coaching, I'll tell you honestly that you'd be better served elsewhere, and I'll help point you in the right direction. There's no point in paying for instruction that can't actually push you forward. However, I'd love to play a game with you in person or online anytime.

Lesson Formats

Private Lessons — $30/hour

One-on-one sessions focused entirely on you. We'll diagnose your biggest weaknesses, work on specific patterns and ideas, and play training games with analysis afterward. Private lessons move at your pace. Available in-person at 607 Church St NE in Decatur, or online via Zoom.

Group Lessons — $15/person per session

Small group sessions of 10–20 players, each roughly 90 minutes long. Every session is built around a single concept — a tactical theme, an endgame technique, an opening idea. There's instruction, guided practice, and plenty of time for actual games. Group lessons are a great way to meet other local players and improve in a social setting.

Summer Camps — $125/child per week

Half-day camps running approximately three hours per day across a full week. Kids cover openings, tactics, endgames, and real games — with enough structure to learn and enough flexibility to have fun. Great for kids who want an immersive experience over the summer.

Online via Zoom — $25/hour

All private lesson formats are available remotely. We use a shared board interface so you can see and play moves in real time, with the same analysis and instruction as an in-person session.

What a Typical Session Looks Like

Most sessions follow a simple structure: a short concept introduction, a set of puzzles or exercises related to that concept, a training game or two, and a brief analysis of what happened. The emphasis is always on understanding over memorization — I'd rather you understand why a move works than be able to recite lines you don't really grasp.

Where Lessons Are Held

In-person lessons and group sessions are held at 607 Church St NE, Decatur, AL 35601. Parking is easy, the space is comfortable, and there's no shortage of chess boards.

Decatur Chess is an independent initiative — not affiliated with the City of Decatur or Decatur Parks & Recreation, which operates its own separate free chess club. We're just local players who love the game and want to share it.

How to Sign Up

The easiest way is to use the contact form on the main page. Let me know your experience level, whether the lessons are for yourself or a child, and any scheduling preferences. I typically respond same-day and we can usually get a first session on the calendar within a week.
